FROM FR. OAKLAND

I normally like to meet with those joining OCIA at the beginning of year, and again right before the Rites of Initiation. That didn’t happen last year. The biggest reason for that was that it took five months just to get through initial meetings with the almost 45 adults, and with children and teens we had about 60 all together. Which was awesome.

We all remember the changes in the translation of the Mass from 15 years ago. The International Committee on the English Language has been revising all of the rites. The most recent was the Order of the Anointing of the Sick, which went into effect at Easter. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) was retranslated as well, and is now known as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), more accurately also describing this longer journey by which individuals 7 years old and older gather for prayer, formation, and community during the year ahead as we seek to come to know and follow Jesus Christ more closely. It’s more than just one rite at the end.

It’s always a joy to hear the stories about what brings people to the Catholic Church. Some come as they are dating, engaged or married to a Catholic and felt called to share in the fullness of Christ themselves. We had a former atheist who was coming for the Eucharist. There was the homeschooling mom who came across the liturgical year. Some watched Catholic videos online to help inform their decision. It was amazing that a few had already read the Catechism. The paths by which the Holy Spirit is working in people’s lives are incredible.

A new chapter

Fr. Kevin Duggan recently moved to a care facility in San Jose, CA to be close to family. They are extremely grateful for your prayers and for those who visited him in the past couple of years of struggle with his health, especially the parishioners from MQP who visited and brought him communion. Archbishop Etienne visited him recently, gave him communion and anointed him, and presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his 28 years of service as a priest of the archdiocese. Thank you for your ongoing prayers for Fr. Kevin during this time of transition.

Help Families in Colombia

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing widespread damage across multiple communities. With collapsed buildings, many families are left without shelter. CRS is supporting our local Church partner, Caritas Colombia with its nationwide network across affected areas, to identify immediate needs for urgent relief, including safe shelter, food, clean water and protection. Your gift today will provide emergency relief to families affected by this disaster. Please donate to bring help and give hope to our sisters and brothers in Colombia.

Free Tables

A generous donor has made a major donation on behalf of the Scouts to buy new tables. Supplementing these funds, we are retiring our old ones in Marian Social Hall and the Pope Room, while we keep some others. If you would like a 5' round table, you are free to take the old ones if you would like them - they admittedly have some rough edges or painted tops. Click here to contact us.

School Supplies - Thank you

Thank you to all of our parishioners who donated to give our school children a great start to a new school year. We assisted St. George Parish School and SVdP families with school supplies and donations this year. The elementary school and the SVdP expressed much gratitude at your generosity.
